Why metrics need context

Team reviewing charts at a table

Green is not a diagnosis. Without context, application analytics becomes interior decorating for engineering: pleasant, expensive, and oddly unrelated to how the product feels.

Three contexts that hide in plain sight

Release windows. A service that deploys at 11:00 KST will look different at 11:08. If your board has no marker, you will invent folklore about ‘late morning blips.’

Warmers and caches. Synthetic traffic and cache preloads flatten origin latency. They are useful — and they lie about cold paths your real users still hit on Mondays.

Traffic shape. A microcloud API that serves clinics will spike when offices open. Comparing that hour to Sunday midnight teaches the wrong lesson about capacity.

Writing context next to the number

We ask learners to keep a limitation note beside each primary panel: what the metric excludes, which customers it represents, and when it last misled the team. That note is part of operations health, not paperwork.
